Natures Best kept Secret: Oil Pulling

Hello Ladies and Gents!

I was put on to “Oil Pulling” (OP) about a year ago. My friend Michelle and I were really into skin care and we were using Aveeno Products and talking about how great our skin looked. I’m a bargain shopper so I was sharing stores that I had I seen the product on sale. I mentioned it to her in passing and we did some research on it and agreed to try it. I don’t think she did but I tried it and have been hooked since. Here are the benefits I got from OP

1. Weight loss

2. Less sugar cravings

3. In 3 days the space where my wisdom tooth was extracted healed. Until then it bled a lot non-stop and the gum on the tooth beside the extracted tooth began to become inflamed and separate from that tooth. After oil pulling, the bleeding stopped and the gum healed up.

4. My skin glowed! I actually began to go make up less outside and there was not difference between then and a full face of concealer  and foundation

5. Bumps and black heads went away

6. My skin looked younger. I already look youthful as it is (without make up) but oil pulling made me look like I was even younger which is incredible considering how young I already look.

7. Improved my mood

8. Improved my digestion and I became more regular

9. Hardly a hint of morning breath let’s call it ladies everyone gets morning breath! lol

10. Back pain reduced

Ok, convinced yet??  Here’s how you Oil Pull to get these benefits

1. In the morning before you eat or drink, take 1 tsp of either oil choice above and swish it around in your mouth between your teeth for 10 minutes until the liquid becomes white and frothy. Sound disgusting but it works. Once the 10 mins have elapsed spit it out in the toilet and brush your teeth but do not swallow the mixture as its believed to contain parasites and bacteria extracted out of your mouth during the pulling.

A good theory behind why this works is because the mouth harbours a lot of bacteria and parasites that can get into your body through swallowing, and through the walls of your mouth that then attacks your organs and bloodstream causing a lot of health conditions. Plaque is a culmination of food and bacteria. The oils soften the plaque and is carried out of your mouth when you expel the mixture into the toilet. Now this is a theory and I don’t know if this for sure is what happens. In fact, why oil pulling works so well is still a mystery but I do know what it has done for me. As soon as I stopped OP, within about 4 days my complexion becomes dull, and I begin to break out and all the benefits I had before start to disappear.

I plan to start this again.

Try this and tell me what you think. If you’ve already done this and benefited I’d love to hear from you. Talk soon!

    • Oh its good!! Drink load of water as well which is good for your over all health and helps your skin to glow!
I can’t wait to hear your review! A former colleague whom I unfortunately lost contact with put me onto this and she couldn’t stop raving about everything it did for her. lol Now I’m hooked 🙂
      Talk to you soon!

  1. i have been oil pulling for a month now and really like the benefits. Sometimes it’s tough after waking not to drink water first, but I’ve gotten used to that thirsty feeling reminding me to do oil pulling first. So far the most noticable benefits have been reduced sugar cravings, clearer skin, whiter teeth. It’s exciting to know that many of the best remedies for the body are the most natural.

  2. Did you try ALL of those oils yourself? If you did, how long did you try each one to notice all of the benefits?

I’ve been experimenting with safflower, sesame and coconut oil for about a week and seem to have the most reactions (I’m still in the healing crisis stage) with safflower oil. I had a terrible breakout last week (very embarrassing at my age) but touch wood, my skin has cleared up very nicely in the last two days. I also had a lot of sensitivity and a little pain around a capped tooth start that is now becoming less sensitive, and I kept feeling like I was coming down with a cold, so I took Immune Renew a lot so I wouldn’t get sick from releasing toxins.

    • Hi Marilyn, I’ve only done the olive oil and I have to say it has been amazing! Skin cleared, wisdom tooth extraction pain gone, execess bleeding from it stopped almost immediately and the list goes on. It has been a really positive experience which is why I was excited to share it with everyone. Due to food allergies, this has been the only one I could try. I’d love to try the almond and sesame oil but unfortunately I can not. Keep me posted on your progress! I’d love to hear how well its going for you!

  3. I just read your last comment. I believe oil pulling works by getting rid of inflammation in the mouth (caused by bacteria). Inflammation in the mouth causes inflammation throughout the body, so by getting rid of it in the mouth, it eliminates it other places too. I believe this is why people experience healing from arthritis from oil pulling. Dr. Mercola writes about inflammation and arthritis, and explains why things like root canals lead to arthritis and even cancer. Bacteria, infection and inflammation builds under the dead tooth and affects the rest of the body. I think I have issues under a tooth from a botched cavity filling from years ago, as well as from a capped tooth, so I think that’s why the OP is helping me.

    • Yes, I believe your right! Alot of what enters our bodies us through the mouth so it makes sense that dead food and bacteria in our mouths can negatively affect our bodies. Unitedly stopped oil pulling but I am going to start again as I have an ear ache that won’t go away and my skin is starting to flare up. Again, keep me posted on your experience and progress on OP. Good luck and talk to you soon!

  4. My wife and I have been oil pulling for 2 months. Wow, what a change. Hair getting darker, bad breath gone. Really feel the difference in mood shift. Eczema gone. Better eyesight. We will do it for the rest of our lives.

    • Hi Dree, yes that’s right just the oil with no water. It works best that way. The benefits are a total body health not just your hair but everything. It affects your weight, appetite, skin, nails, everything 🙂

  5. I’ve only been pulling for a couple of days & I love it!!! I’ve been telling everyone! I was just wondering when you do your second op of the day? How long before & after eating & drinking? I drink a lot of water through out the day do I have to wait a while to pull again after that too? Thanks! & Great article too!

  6. I have been using coconut oil for about 4 days now. So far I really love it, but today I did get very dizzy which is unusual for me. I have diabetes that I am taking victoza for, and I wonder if oil pulling with coconut oil lowers blood sugar. As soon as I ate a piece of bread, it went away and so I’m hoping this is just a temporary side effect that won’t get any worse. Any thoughts on this? thanks!

    • Hi Marci, that sounds a bit concerning. My advice to you would be to see a doctor about it and raise your concerns to him and see what he says. Good luck! Have you had that happen again since?

      • No, it has not happened again, or I probably would have stopped until talking to my doctor. I did get a pain, possibly in my cervix, that came & went about 3 times or so, in the first hour after doing my oil pulling this morning, but I took an ibuprofin and it never happened again all day. Wonder what that was all about? Any ideas? I know it is “die off” probably getting after an infection I didn’t know I had. I had hoped to see some weight loss, but so far not anything. 😦

  7. I have been oil pulling for 5 days now with sesame oil and already can feel the benefits from it, teeth are whiter, sinus clearing, mood more upbeat, energy is certainly on the up.
I am trying to lose weight and am wondering will the oil pulling help and how soon will I see a difference in my weight.

    • There are weight loss benefits to oil pulling. I can’t guarantee it will happen that way for you but I have personally experienced weight loss but I can also attribute it to my change in appetite and cravings (sugar)

    • Hi Tammie, I’ve been oil pulling for six days now. I’m switching out my oils each time and I’m oil pulling in the morning and again before bed. I have lost three pounds. I noticed that I no longer crave snacks in between meals and I’ve cut out my after lunch candy bar. The thought of the sugar just doesn’t appeal to me anymore. Have you tried sesame oil? That one seems to have the most benefits.

      • Hi Joann. Your results sounds amazing and it’s exactly what I’ve experienced. Unfortunately due to an allergy to sesame oil I can’t try that one but I have heard a lot of benefits to it. Keep us posted on your results with it and with your current oils. I’m excited for you!

  8. I have been OP for about 7 weeks. I first noticed that my sense of taste was very keen. I could not tolerate much salt in food at all. For some reason I am almost back to normal with that. I’ve so far lost 7 lbs. , thats a pound a week. I eat like I did before and have been drinking more juices and teas, yet the weight came off. I no longer take my arthritis meds because my join pain is so infrequent. I use sesame oil, unrefined.

  9. Greetings I am so delighted I found your
weblog, I really found you by accident, while I was browsing on Bing for something
else, Regardless I am here now and would just like to say kudos for a marvelous post and a all round interesting blog (I also love the theme/design),
I don’t have time to read it all at the minute but I have book-marked it and also added in your RSS feeds,
so when I have time I will be back to read more, Please do keep up the excellent jo.

  10. I just stumbled upon this concept the other day and was very intrigued. I wanted to try it but had concerns because I am just…such an oily person. I feel like the amount of oil I produce in one day could fry an egg. My skin, specifically in my t-zone area, is oily probably within 2-3 hours of putting on makeup. My eyelids specifically produce a lot of oil and by roughly noon or 1pm my eyeshade has completed creased/melted away leaving nothing but oil. My hair is also extremely oily. I have to wash it daily because it is greasy by night time. Oddly enough my body is pretty dry, specifically at my knees, elbows and feet where I experienced eczema as a child. And oddly enough while my face and hair are extremely oily, my lips are EXTREMELY dry. I’ve never known how to describe the dryness on my lips except to say that I feel like a thin layer of skin sheds off every day (I did have someone once say my eczema has probably moved to my lips, which I never knew was possible, but I believe to be true). I was curious to see if this would have bad effects on my face/hair/eyes since they are extremely oily. I wasn’t sure if it is like the concept that some people think if you’re oily you don’t have to moisturize but in fact you have to, otherwise your body will over produce the oil. I almost hoped that maybe the oil could help my body produce less oil. Any thoughts?

    • Have you heard of oil cleansing method? I know it sounds crazy to wash your face with oils, but it really does work. I have been doing it for about a month and my face is less oily. I am still “purging” as they say, but I had a lot of clogged pores, just below the surface. They are all finally starting to clear. It is amazing to me. I have already gotten rid of most of my blackheads and all of milla. I am excite to try the oil pulling method. I was just put on some medication that has caused me to gain some weight and I need to loose it, because diet isn’t helping (I have spine issues and can’t do much in the way of exercising).

    • I don’t know if you’ve found a good method yet, but just to share with anyone else with the same issues: Yes, putting oil on the face does help with oil production. It has to be the right kind! Olive oil breaks me out, bur coconut oil doesn’t. Also, any acne medications, scrubs, or moisturizers can also contribute to dryness, making your face produce more oil to compensate. Use a homemade scrub to wash your face (also a great makeup remover) – I’ve found gram (chickpea) flour mixed with honey and fine salt or sugar makes the best facial scrub that won’t dry out your face. Then moisturize with coconut oil (unrefined virgin cold-pressed).

For your hair treatment depends on the porosity or your hair, and the type. Something that might help my oily scalp and dry ends might make your hair worse. I’ve started only washing with conditioner, no shampoos. It takes a while for the hair to adjust and not be sticky or oily, usually about two weeks. If you need to get rid of buildup, diluted Castile soap or a vinegar wash will help.

  11. WOW! God is good. I had no idea how oils could change your insides:) one day I just felt the need to drink olive oil & the benefits are outstanding:) in just 3days my teeth are whiter, skin & lips softer, more energy,& feel fabulous. Thank you for a awesome blog.
    Great wisdom!!!
May you & yours be richly blessed!!

  12. its 3 days now i started op and i am looking forward for the positive results. thanks you for a useful update’s.

  13. I am on a lot of medication, does anyone know if it is safe to start a healing crisis when you are very unwell? Also, is it safe to OP when you have mercury amalgam in your teeth. I would be grateful if anyone knows about these two issues. Thank you

  14. I came across this while looking for information about my lashes since using coconut oil. I’m very interested!!! I’m a lil confused. It says wake up n don’t drink water… Do I still brush my teeth? Can I chew gum n stuff through out the day?
Awesome blog by the way. Thanks for the great info..

  15. I just started OP today! I heard about it on Dr. Oz’ show and decided to try it. Everything I have heard makes so much sense! It was not difficult at all! I am using Sesame oil as it was the one they touted as having the most benefits. Although, I plan to switch it up every couple of months as recommended. I’ll keep you posted!

  16. I have just started OP with Organic virgin coconut oil. Today was day three. I haven’t noticed any changes except my face has become very oily (I’ve never had oily skin before)

  17. Pingback: My Oil Pulling Journey: Week One | The Grass Skirt

  18. I’ve been oil pulling for 2 weeks now. I learned about op while googling something completely different. There are a lot of compelling blogs (including this one) and videos about the subject. In two weeks I’ve noticed whiter teeth, pinker tongue, clearer skin and a reduction in bloating. I was told by a Chinese acupuncturist that white on the tongue means “heat” — and heat means “inflammation”. Glad to have a pink tongue! I’m looking forward to reporting more. I pull first thing in the am and sometimes at night before bed. I use castor, coconut, and sunflower, and plan to try sesame. So far I think castor is most beneficial. I highly recommend OP!!

  19. Im so exited about this myself im new at op. i noticed the fact that i sleep better cause i dont have the urge to get up in the middle of the night to go to yhe bathroom since starting op. My bumps om my upper thighs are also going away because i use co as a moisturizer.. im so exited im trying to turn everyone else on to it.

  20. I first found out about oil pulling on Dr. Oz and it boasted whiter teeth. Before considering trying to OP I read a great deal from many online sites. Today is day 6 of OP with Sesame Oil and I am sold. When I first started 6 days ago my entire house was battling Bronchitis. My caught caught it first, a week later it was me, and another week later my husband joined us. I am the only one OP in the house. This week my coughing has stopped almost completely while they sound like they are still trying to bring up a lung. My sinuses were draining and when I laid down I would wake with extreme ear pain and a sore throat but both of these symptoms have stopped. I was taking antibiotics for the bronchitis and as with many women the antibiotics caused a yeast infection. Well get this…… it went away with nothing but OP so no prescription for me :-)! I have very dry skin in the winter months. I can always expect my face to have dry patches and peeling skin. After about day 4 of pulling with my elbow on the table I leaned over and rested my freshly washed and un moisturized cheek on my fist. I immediately was surprised that the skin felt soft and like it does in the summer months without and moisturizer, WOW. After day 4 I woke with a horrible bout of diarrhea and was afraid I was getting ill but found that since that day I am more regular in that I go everyday now instead of my normal twice a week. Finally I lost 5 pounds this week and while I am overweight I am not obese at 150 pounds. This is by far the best thing I have ever found. I am sold completely. Good luck everyone!

  21. Just a note: Save all your used bread or other plastic food bags to spit the oil in, tie it up good, then throw in the trash. No use using extra, or good bags to end up in landfill. Save all the ones you’d end up throwing away. The first time I tried oil pulling, I spit the oil out in the trash and the ants came, they were literally in the trash can all over the oil, so please bag it and tie it up good. Sweet oil pulling~

    • To be honest I am not sure only because I can’t pull with sesame oil as I am allergic. I would think you don’t have to considering the fact that it is a oil that many people cook with and don’t refrigerate so for that reason I doubt you would have to.

  22. I oil pulled with coconut oil for eight days. Almost immediately I saw the benefits others have cited. The downside for me is that my blood pressure shot up. I feel strongly it has to do with the Rx I take. I don’t know the chemistry aspect of it, but my numbers reached 203/120. I stopped OP and they came back down but have not fully leveled out. I’m at a cross roads. Do I stop my Rx and just oil pull? I wonder if my HBP will be improved naturally. Do I chance stopping my Rx and having my system – so saturated with BP meds – possibly stroke out? Is OP trying to clean my system and depleting the effects of drugs? I don’t want to give up OP forever. Of course, I don’t want to have a stroke either. FYI, I take 25 mg HCTZ.

    • Update – I was sick, as it turns out. It wasn’t the coconut oil. I’ve gone back to pulling and am still taking the hctz to control hbp. I rotate with sunflower oil.

  23. A colleague just talked to me about oil pulling over dinner, i had never heard of it and I decided to read some more! Interesting , I’m going to try this when I travel back home, I’m not ready to start this away from my comfort zone, ah!

  24. I’ve been OP for a week and a half. First with sesame oil then coconut. I am back to the sesame oil. Benefits I’ve noticed so far – energy has returned, my appetite has decreased, I was constantly bloated but since OP no bloating at all, period was much easier, no longer constipated, my face doesn’t seem to be as red splotched, mood vastly improved, I have periodontal disease and I’m waiting to see how it helps with that. The reason I went back to the sesame oil is it seemed to help with mucus build up in back of throat from my sinus. I would highly recommend oil pulling and I’m going to continue. Oh, I’ve also lost a couple of pounds.

    • Hello. I’ve been oil pulling for a week now. I choice sesame oil. Benefit so far- whiter teeth, improved skin, boost of energy. I have a question though- what is the recommended time to pull? I’ve read from 10 min to 20. I’ve been doing 20. Also, should I spit it out when it turns thick or wait until it gets liquid again? Just want to make sure in doing it right.
      Thank you! Live your blog!

    • That is awesome! Sesame oil is really good. It’s ranked high on the types of oils you should be pulling with. I am not surprised you are seeing such great results! Keep on pulling girl and let us know your fantastic results! Great job!

  25. I have been oil pulling for about a week and went to the doctor because I was due for a full physical. My blood sugar levels came back a little high.. I have never had any issues beforehand. Is this normal? Should I stop oil pulling?

    • Hmm, thats interesting. One one hand you’ve only been doing it for a week. But on the other hand if your blood sugar levels are high you should definitely bring them up to your doctor and discuss it with him further. Let me know what he says.

  26. Do you think it’s okay to switch up the oils you use? I’m torn between coconut and sesame oil- my main reasons for oil pulling are whiter teeth, getting rid of oral thrush, clearing acne and lifting mood. I’m thinking of alternating between sesame and coconut each day- does this sound like a good idea or not?

    • I like that idea of switching it up however I think you should do so every week instead of every other day. I say that so you can get an accurate reading of how your body is responding to each oil. But if you do decide to switch everyday please let me know what your results are.

  27. Its been one week oilpulling using Sesame. Well I dont crave sugars even if I m very hungry. At the store , I look at cakes but I dont reach. More energy. More Alert. More happier more socialbe. The best part , I ve lost 5 pounds

  28. Are all sesame oils created equal? I have an unrefined “toasted” sesame oil in my pantry right now. Is that a good oil to pull with? I’ve also got a good coconut oil that I’d like to use as well, but I’m just unsure if I have the correct sesame oil.

This has been the most informative site I’ve found on oil pulling. Thank you very much! Can’t wait to get started!!

  29. Amazing YouTube movies posted at this website, I am going to subscribe for daily updates, as I dont want to fail to take this series. gcdbkebeefedcdeg

  30. I am new to OP but I noticed some new wrinkles above my lip. Am I doing it wrong? Do you think I am pulling it too strong?

  31. What about the puckering and wrinkling of your mouth while you pull? (like a smoker, except you are doing it for 10-20 min.!) would this not cause winkles over time? I mean smokers repetitive actions of puckering and wrinkling are not as extreme as what you have to do to oil pull…and smokers wrinkles of the repetitive action usually take at least a decade or 2 to show up. I have held off from oil pulling on a regular basis for years because of this concern. Do you know of any info out there where people have oil pulled daily for at least a decade or two… and did they develop lines around the mouth from the daily repetitive actions?

    • It actually doesn’t cause wrinkling. My skin has never been as supple as when I was doing it. Also your puckering for so short a time that it’s relative in terms of causing wrinkles

  32. Great thread, thanks for keeping it ‘alive’, I’m only day two of OP with unrefined cold pressed sesame oil and experiencing such dramatic results that I wanted to add myself to the appreciation!

Seems hard to believe but there appears to be a balancing and normalising of anxiety/depression and appetite. I am generally feeling more peaceful and upbeat and relaxed. I didnt feel like eating after dinner, which is unusual, normally I am ‘fighting’ cravings.

Am experiencing mild- moderate headaches which I attribute to removal of toxins, so this is a good sign.

Day two, felt gross starting the day this way but afterwards such a clean teeth feeling I havent had in years!

    I’m hooked!

Choice of oils – optimise according to your ayurvedic constitution, There are lots of online quizzes. Sesame is warming for vata kapha, pitta can use sunflower/coconut oil as these are warming.

  33. I discovered oil pulling a few years back while having terrible digestive and intestinal issues. Our digestive system starts in the mouth. When we stop the bad stuff in the mouth our body has a better chance of healing itself and staying healthy.Oil pulling stops the bad guys that cause digestive and internal issues and so our digestive system can digest foods and work properly making our immune system stronger and getting nutrition from our foods and keeping us regular which in turn keeps us healthy!!!! OP is good for you……

  34. I did it for about two months. my face was breaking out, and it wasn’t until abt 2 weeks in that I thought that maybe this was caused from the coconut oil… I kept it up bc figured it was just a temporary change in skin composition problem. but the acne continued, and this was deep, more like very underground that sometimes surfaced, sometimes did not, so I stopped oil pulling for awhile to determine if the skin reaction was related to that. and, in abt 10 days face was cleared up. anyone else have this side effect? I’m concerned abt starting it up again. this occurred abt 4 months ago / keep thinking about it, but hesitant.

    • Wow I am stunned that happened. I think it could be the coconut oil. I’ve had amazing results with olive oil but I find coconut oil a bit greasy so this could be your culprit

  35. Just come across this blogpost & was fascinated! Should I start immediately on a daily basis or is it best to start gradually just a few times a week to build up? Also, I’d prefer to do this at night rather than in the morning as have more time; any reason why mornings are best?

    • Start immediately. I think as a good start you should do it at night then gradually after a week do it in the mornings as well. The premise us to allow it to clean toxins out of your blood to give you a fresh start before you eat or sleep.
